The VITEEE 2027 exam pattern now carries 100 questions for 400 marks in 2 hours. Last year it was 125 questions for 500 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes. Applications close on March 31, 2027.
Vellore Institute of Technology set out the change in its VITEEE 2027 information brochure. Registration opened on October 20, 2026 at viteee.vit.ac.in.
Shorter does not mean easier. Each question still gets 72 seconds. Every section now runs on its own clock, so you cannot borrow minutes from Chemistry.
What changed in the VITEEE 2027 exam pattern?
Four things changed: the question count, the total marks, the duration and the section timing.
The paper drops 25 questions. Marks fall from 500 to 400. Duration falls by 30 minutes.
Careers360 reported on October 21 that VIT has also dropped slot booking. Candidates earlier picked their own exam slot.
| Item | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 125 | 100 |
| Total marks | 500 | 400 |
| Duration | 150 minutes | 120 minutes |
| Physics questions | 35 | 25 |
| Chemistry questions | 35 | 25 |
| Aptitude questions | 10 | 5 |
| Section time limits | None | Yes, four blocks |
VIT has revised the syllabus too. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics each get new topics. The syllabus sits on vit.ac.in, and VIT suggests NCERT textbooks.
Does the shorter paper give you more time per question?
No. Each question still gets 72 seconds, the same as in 2026.
Mathematics or Biology gets 50 minutes for 40 questions. That works out at 75 seconds a question.
Physics gets 30 minutes for 25 questions. Chemistry gets the same 30 minutes.

There is no break inside the 2 hour test.
Which subject gains the most marks in VITEEE 2027?
Mathematics. It carries 160 of the 400 marks, which is 40% of the paper.
In 2026 the same 40 questions were worth 160 of 500 marks, or 32%.
Physics falls from 140 marks to 100. Its share drops from 28% to 25%.
Chemistry falls the same way, from 140 marks to 100.
Aptitude is cut hardest. Its 10 questions become 5, and its 40 marks become 20.
English holds 5 questions, now worth 20 marks.
Biology candidates answer 40 Biology questions in place of Mathematics.
How does negative marking work in VITEEE 2027?
A correct answer gives 4 marks. A wrong answer takes 1 mark away. An unanswered question scores zero.
Questions marked for review also score zero.
A guess that fails therefore costs 5 marks against a question you knew.
Negative marking started last year, Careers360 reported.
Each candidate may sit the test once. A second attempt cancels the application and the admission.
