You cannot change your B.Tech branch in the middle of first year. The switch happens once, at the start of second year. It runs only against seats left vacant in the branch you want. Your first-year CGPA decides it.
AICTE, the All India Council for Technical Education, is the body that approves engineering colleges in India. The rule is national. The exact CGPA, fee and form differ by university.
This guide covers the AICTE base rule and the vacancy formula you can check yourself. It then gives the position at ten states and university systems for 2026.
In 30 Seconds
When it happens: Once, at the start of second year, not mid-first-year.
What decides it: Your first-year CGPA, and only against a vacant seat.
The cost: Often nothing for government quota; up to Rs 1 Lakh at some private universities.
What to do: Maximise first-year CGPA, then apply on your university portal in the short window.

Can you change your B.Tech branch in first year?
No. There is no mid-year branch change. You apply after your first-year results. The new branch starts in the third semester, the start of second year.
A student who joined Mechanical in July 2025 can move to CSE only from the second year, in 2026. A CSE seat must be vacant first. The first year is common enough across branches that no credits are lost.
Diploma lateral-entry students cannot apply for branch change at all under VTU rule COB 3(7)(c).
What does AICTE allow for branch change?
AICTE sets the limits. Colleges run the process. A change is allowed only against a real vacancy in the branch you want.
It is decided by merit, which means your first-year CGPA. It is a college-level process, not a state counselling round.
Popular branches like CSE and AI fill up, so vacancies there are few. Core branches like Civil and Mechanical lose students, so that is where seats open. From 2026-27 AICTE also allows two admission cycles, July-August and January-February.
How is a branch-change vacancy calculated?
A seat must exist before your CGPA matters. Most universities use one formula: V = I minus Reg minus Rep. Here I is the sanctioned intake, Reg is the regular second-year students, and Rep is the repeaters.
Turn Your Achievements Into Stories That Students Actually Read
Feature admissions, placements, rankings, events, research initiatives, achievements, and institutional milestones before a highly engaged education-focused audience.
AKTU adds lateral-entry students, so its formula is V = I minus Reg minus Rep minus Lat. VTU sets this out in COB 3(8). The count is done branch by branch, after first-year results and makeup exams.
At RVCE in Bengaluru in 2024, someone moved into Mechanical at a 6.43 CGPA. In 2025, CSE at the same college took nobody at any CGPA. That is the whole point. No vacancy, no change.
What CGPA do you need to switch to CSE?
There is no fixed cutoff. It moves every year with the number of vacant seats and the CGPAs of everyone else applying. In top colleges the real target for CSE is 9.0 and above.
At the IITs, only the top 1 to 2 percent of the first-year batch move into CSE. That usually needs a CGPA near 8.5.
Moving from Civil to Mechanical is far easier than moving into CSE. At IIIT Hyderabad a non-CSE to CSE move also needs about 8.5.
Is Rs 5 to 7 Lakh worth losing to a branch change, or should you finish and add a minor?
If your CGPA clears your college’s CSE cutoff and a seat is vacant, the change costs little and no year. If it does not, dropping a year to retake the exam costs that year and repeats the fee.
A minor is the cheaper path. You keep your seat, add 9 to 12 credits in the field you wanted, and lose no time.
Branch change rules by state and university, 2026
The table below sets out where each system stands. Verify the CGPA and the fee with your own college before you apply.
| University / State | When | How it is decided |
|---|---|---|
| VTU, Karnataka | Start of 2nd year | First-year CGPA merit, online at vtu.ac.in. Window 4 to 5 days. One rule for all affiliated, autonomous and constituent colleges. Form fee about Rs 600. |
| AKTU, Uttar Pradesh | Start of 2nd year | Institute-level merit. 2026 format issued on aktu.ac.in. Vacancy counted within 7 days of the first-year result. |
| Maharashtra | Start of 2nd year | College-level under AICTE rules, not the state CET cell. The MHT-CET seat on cetcell.mahacet.org is separate. |
| IITs | After 1st year | Top-CGPA only, through option entry. CSE at IIT Bombay, Delhi or Madras needs about 8.5, and only 1 to 2 percent succeed. |
| BITS Pilani | 2nd year | First-year CGPA plus new-branch availability. About 5 to 15 percent of the batch switches. |
| VIT and SRM | 2nd year | VIT: fee Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 Lakh, CSE needs above 8.0. SRM: above 7.5 usually enough. Manipal allows a 2nd-year switch on a CGPA rule. |
| Tamil Nadu (Anna University) | Not published | Entry is TNEA on tneaonline.org. No central internal branch-change rule is published. Ask the college. |
| Andhra and Telangana | 2nd year | A branch-wise cutoff and available seats. Rules differ by university, so check yours. |
| West Bengal (MAKAUT, Jadavpur) | Varies | No uniform state rule is published. Jadavpur allows very few moves and expects a high CGPA. Contact the college. |
Will a branch change increase your fee?
Sometimes, and this is the part colleges do not publish. In Karnataka, the Government-KUPECA agreement sets government-quota tuition by category, not by branch. A Mechanical to CSE move changes that tuition by nothing.
Management-quota tuition is branch-wise. No college publishes how a management-quota student is re-billed after a change. RVCE’s 2024 record even shows a Rs 9,000 change-fee stage against VTU’s Rs 8,100.
At VIT the switch carries a branch-change fee of up to Rs 1 Lakh. Get the new fee in writing from the accounts section before you accept the seat.
What if you do not get the branch change?
Two routes remain. You can drop the year and retake JEE Main, KCET or your state CET for a fresh admission to your branch. That costs a year and repeats the fee.
Or you can finish your current degree and add a minor. AICTE lets you earn a minor in another field through 9 to 12 credits. A Mechanical student can add a CSE minor without changing branch.
Diploma holders can also enter second year directly through lateral entry, via KCET-linked DCET in Karnataka. A branch once changed cannot be reverted or changed again.
