About HBCSE
The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is the national centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), based in Mumbai. It runs India’s science Olympiad programme, from the national screening stage through to selection and training camps for international teams. HBCSE coordinates Olympiad participation in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy and mathematics, supported by the National Steering Committee on Science Olympiads.
What Did the Chemistry Olympiad 2026 Exams Test?
The Chemistry Olympiad 2026 tested students through two papers, one theoretical and one experimental. The theory paper carried nine problems.
Those nine problems covered the kinetics of the oscillatory BZ reaction, the design of porous framework materials known as COFs, the structure of a chiral cardiolipin, nitrogen fixation using transition metal catalysts, and the catalytic reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide, PIB reported.
The practical paper had three problems. Students synthesised a metal complex from unknown reagents, identified 20 biochemical mixtures using five enzyme mixtures through microscale tests, and worked out the composition of three acid mixtures through pH-metric titrations. One task used a natural indicator made from red cabbage.
How Does This Compare With India’s Past IChO Results?
This was India’s 27th appearance at the International Chemistry Olympiad and its first all-gold result. Across all 27 appearances, 32 percent of Indian students have won gold, 51 percent silver and 17 percent bronze, PIB said.
The trend line has moved sharply in the last decade. Over India’s last ten appearances, the gold rate rose to 43 percent and the silver rate to 53 percent. The 2026 sweep pushes that further.
