CUET-UG 2027 may get shorter and simpler. The Ministry of Education, UGC and NTA are working on a new plan. It could cut the maximum subjects from five to four. Students may finish in one day. Nothing is confirmed yet.
Manash Gohain reported the plan in The Times of India in early October 2026. The report cites government sources. No official notice has come from NTA so far.
A shorter exam sounds like relief. But fewer subjects can mean fewer course options. Students with four subjects can apply to fewer programmes than those with five.
CUET-UG is the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate seats. The National Testing Agency, or NTA, conducts it. India’s higher education regulator is the University Grants Commission, or UGC.
What is changing in CUET-UG 2027?
The plan has one main aim. A student should finish CUET-UG in a single day. Today the exam runs over a 12 to 15 day window. Many candidates travel to the centre two or three times.
The current test is already large. A student can pick up to five subjects. Each paper runs for 60 minutes. In all, the test offers 37 subjects.
The 37 subjects cover 13 languages and 23 domain subjects. One general aptitude test completes the list.
How long would each paper be?
Each paper would get shorter under the plan. The length may fall from 60 minutes to 40 or 45 minutes. Questions per paper may drop from 50 to 35 or 40.
The whole exam would also run faster. A student taking five subjects may finish in about 180 to 200 minutes. Five 60-minute papers take up to 300 minutes now.
A shorter paper is not always easier. With fewer questions, one wrong answer can cost more.

CUET-UG: now and the 2027 plan
| What | Now (2026) | Proposed for 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum subjects | 5 | 4 |
| Minutes per paper | 60 | 40 to 45 |
| Questions per paper | 50 | 35 to 40 |
| Trips to the centre | 2 to 3 | 1 |
| Testing time for five subjects | up to 300 minutes | 180 to 200 minutes |
The subject row matters most. Four subjects instead of five changes how many courses you can target.
Why cutting five subjects to four could cost students
A lower subject cap would narrow a student’s choices. Five subjects can open more courses than four. Someone who wants backup options loses one slot.
Some students take extra subjects on purpose. A science student may add a commerce paper for a second degree option. Four subjects would remove that cushion.
How would the new subject groups work?
Subjects would be sorted into groups. The groups would follow the combinations students pick most. NTA could then schedule related papers together.
Science is the clearest example. Physics, Chemistry and Biology would form three papers. General Studies could be a fourth.
A Delhi University seat shows how this helps. Someone aiming for Physics Honours could take only the papers that course needs. Each university would decide whether to count the General Studies score.
What is confirmed and what is only proposed?
Nothing here is confirmed yet. Every change above is a proposal under discussion. The Ministry of Education, UGC and NTA have issued no public order.
The timeline is also open. As of October 5, 2026, NTA had not released the CUET-UG 2027 Information Bulletin. Past cycles point to a notice in December 2026 or January 2027.
So plan for five subjects, not four. About 15 lakh students are expected to take CUET-UG in 2027. The exam usually runs in the May to June window.
If I want to apply to five courses, is four subjects enough?
It depends on the courses you choose. Many programmes need only one or two CUET-UG subjects each. Four subjects can cover several courses when they share papers. A student who targets very different streams may feel the four-subject cap.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CUET-UG 2027 confirmed to have four subjects?
No, the four-subject limit for CUET-UG 2027 is only a proposal. The Ministry of Education, UGC and NTA are still discussing it. Officials have issued no notice so far. For now, a student can still choose up to five subjects, as in 2026. Plan for five until NTA confirms a change.
Will the whole exam be held in one day in 2027?
The one-day plan for CUET-UG 2027 is proposed, not fixed. Under it, a student would sit all chosen papers in a single day. Today the exam is spread over a 12 to 15 day window, with two or three trips. NTA has not confirmed the single-day format.
When will the 2027 notification come out?
The CUET-UG 2027 notification date is not announced yet. Based on past cycles, NTA usually releases the Information Bulletin around December or January. Testing then runs in the May to June window. As of October 5, 2026, the 2027 bulletin was not out. Check nta.ac.in for the official date.
How many subjects can I take right now?
In CUET-UG 2026, a student can take up to five subjects. Each paper lasts 60 minutes and has 50 questions. The exam offers 37 subjects in total. A new plan may cut the limit to four from 2027. That change is not confirmed.
Does a shorter paper mean fewer questions?
Yes, the proposed shorter CUET-UG paper would carry fewer questions. The count may drop from 50 to about 35 or 40 per paper. Paper time may fall from 60 minutes to 40 or 45 minutes. With fewer questions, each one can carry more weight. None of this is final yet.
