What changed: MCC will replace manual scribes with an in-house AI Voice Chat Scribe for blind students.
Who it affects: Visually impaired students at Madras Christian College, Tambaram, Chennai.
The date: It starts at the third internal assessment, before the November 2026 semester exams.
Still unknown: Whether the University of Madras will allow it in final semester exams.
Madras Christian College will let visually impaired students write exams using an AI tool instead of a human scribe. The software is called Voice Chat Scribe. MCC built it in-house. It is expected to start at the third internal continuous assessment, before the November 2026 semester exams.
Madras Christian College, or MCC, is an autonomous college in Tambaram, Chennai, affiliated to the University of Madras. The tool was developed by student interns at the MCC-MRF Innovation Park in Tambaram.
The plan covers MCC’s own internal assessments first. It runs on a closed college server. It is not a University of Madras or state-wide replacement for manual scribes. The higher-accuracy claim is the college’s own, and it has not yet run in a live exam.
What is MCC’s AI Voice Scribe?
The Voice Chat Scribe is a voice-to-text platform for blind and low-vision students. A student dictates answers in English straight into a secure system. No other person transcribes the answers.
The tool lets students hear questions, repeat audio prompts and check word counts. They can do this by voice command or keyboard shortcut. It also formats text on spoken command: bold, underline, sub-headings and moving paragraphs.
A separate command mode keeps software instructions apart from answer text. MCC says the system recognises both English and Tamil.
Why is MCC replacing manual scribes?
Principal Prof Dr P Wilson said the number of scribe volunteers had been falling. He said manual scribes did not always reflect what a student meant to say.
MCC said the manual system caused transcription errors. In some cases, it said, a scribe could unintentionally influence a student’s answer. The new tool is meant to remove that dependence.
How will MCC stop exam malpractice?
The software will run on a restricted, confidential server. MCC says this design protects exam integrity and prevents malpractice. The closed setup keeps the answer file inside the college system.
The decision followed talks with the Office of the Controller of Examinations, deans and heads of departments. The student support team for the differently abled also took part.
